Technical Officer - Field Operations

Position Summary:

The Technical Officer-Field Operations will oversee all aspects of water well drilling for the operations of 4ward Development within scheduled timelines. This incumbent is expected to apply evaluative and constructive frameworks that allow for the development of the knowledge of fundamental geology and an understanding of how rock types of impact groundwater occurrence in different geologic settings. As a seasoned professional, he will liaise with industry players and stakeholders for information and knowledge acquisition. The Officer is also required to devise and deploy data-driven analytical tools for hydro geophysical data analysis and interpretation for the selection of appropriate drilling sites/locations. This will be in addition to formulating an evaluative and judicious resource use guide for the implementation of a cost-efficient drilling program.

At this career level, the incumbent is generally competent in several operation specialties and may be called on to coach or oversee the work of junior operations staff. The TOFO will join the Operations Team and report to the Operations Manager.

Responsibilities:

Support the Operations Department in coordinating and supervising all geophysical studies and drilling operations undertaken for and on behalf of 4ward Development WA and ensure that selected drilling points are well marked and identified.

Design and construct all newly drilled boreholes and ensure the wells are developed to free the water from drilling fluid, aquifer sediments and possible foreign materials introduced during the drilling process.

Collect and collate accurate hydrogeological data of water well logs, GPS coordinates and photos of all water wells.

Conduct varied pumping tests and carry out analysis of pumping test data.

Provide technical insight in processing, studying and analyzing geophysical and other hydrogeological survey data to recommend the best drilling sites for successful drilling operations.

Collect, label and appropriately store water samples to be forwarded to 4ward accredited water laboratory for quality analysis.

Prepare and submit technical reports on all field operations (ie drilling, geophysical survey, pumping test etc) and file them accordingly for easy reference.

Provide technical assistance to contractors regarding issues such as geophysical survey, borehole drilling, pumping test and promote NUMA brand standard requirements.

Apply the knowledge of fundamental geology to develop an understanding of how rock types and structures in an area impact groundwater occurrence and movement.

Understand and interpret maps, geophysical data and historical models to build up a picture of the groundwater regime and possible sources of contaminants of selected drilling sites.

Produce Monthly/weekly reports to the Operations Officer of all field activities on a regular and timely basis.

Participate in the planning of the weekly work schedule of the Operations Department and undertake any other assigned task.

Other responsibilities:

  • Liaise with other industry players and professionals in related fields for information and knowledge acquisition.

  • Ensure strict compliance with environmental and industry legislative requirements and keep up to date with new legislative developments.

  • Observe all safety, health and safeguarding protocols/guidelines at all times during fieldwork and communicate to the Operations Officer on any field accidents/incidents for prompt action.

  • Facilitate delivery of materials supplies and services required for drilling operations.

  • Manage drilling cost and progress.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education***

First Degree in Geological Engineering, Earth Science or a related field

Experience

Not less than three (3) years of experience working in a similar capacity; or, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Preferred knowledge, skills and competencies

  • Good understanding/Knowledge of hydro Geology.

  • Good IT background.

  • Proven supervisory experience of extensive drilling of water wells

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient in well drilling data management system and MS Office suite

  • Skilled in managing complex well operations in demanding environments.

  • Knowledge of drilling regulations and laws in Ghana

  • Outstanding knowledge of well planning for drilling and completion operations

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment: Office – Field Office Environment; Must be willing to relocate.

Travel Requirements May be required to travel up to 90% of normal schedule. Should be able to ride a motor bike.
